WEEK 8: Crossville, TN

To start, I had exchanges on Tuesday!! I was really nervous for some reason, but it was way fun. I went with Sister Williams, and we are literally copy and paste the same. We have very similar personalities, and we like the same music (which basically means we are the same person). We were just driving, and I randomly said, "this is random, but you strike me as someone who listens to dayglow." Then she looked at me with the widest eyes and started freaking out cuz she LOVES dayglow hahaha I am a seer. We started listing off other bands and she loves the wombats! tommy just went to their concert, so he sent me a video of our favorite song from the wombats, so I showed sister Williams and she was bouncing up and down in the car cuz it was her favorite song, and she hasn't heard it in well over a year hahahaha it was so fantastic. Her and her cousins also love love love the youtuber marla catherine, and i went to high school with marla (we had the same classes and went to school dances in the same group n stuff) and so im gonna ask marla to send me a video of her saying hi to sister williams! She would flip haha its gonna be great. We went out for dinner together, taught lessons together, and had the whole day. It was super fun. It was probably the most fun day I've had on my mission so far.

Update from the last email, we got the lock on our door changed, so hopefully people don't come in again in the middle of the night hahaha. But there is a really creepy situation in the ward haha. So there is this guy (I'll call him brother hill) and he has been acting weird lately. He has been a member a long time and he knows the rules of missionaries, but he still comes up and hugs my companion and I. We were just like "well, he's super friendly and he sneaks up on the side so we can't really push him away, so whatever." But then it got weird. When he would come give us a hug, he would come in from the side so we couldn't stick our hand out for a handshake. And when he hugs us, he rubs my back. It's awful. We try to avoid eye contact with him after church cuz when we make eye contact, he follows us around until he hugs us. Then he asked sister jones to send a picture of us for our "profile pic" (which is sketch cuz missionaries switch out so much, profile pics are useless) but sister jones didn't think anything of it, so she sent one.... oops. Then he came up to us and said "we have baby goats!! Come over and see them!" Then he started saying we have to come over to do yoga with the goats... ummm... yoga?? With a 50 year old creeper? He invited us to do yoga like 3 times and at first, we didn't think much of it, but the more he asked the more we realized that it was kinda suspicious. So, we talked to the Dabell's about it and the said to STAY AWAY. Apparently, he is known to be a creeper when it comes to young girls, especially the missionaries. But he only touches a select few. And with my luck, I'm one of them. The Dabell's says that he targets certain girls, and although he hasn't been charged with anything, they said it is smart to stay away as much as possible. I can't do anything about the fact that he follows us around, but when he tries to hug, I'm going to physically stop him and shake his hand. (Oh, and the Dabell's said that he has previously gotten beat up in a church parking lot for doing bad things with someone's wife). So yeah... Pray for me hahaha.

We also were knocking on doors and there was a house that didn't have a front porch hahaha so the front door was like 3 feet off the ground. I felt so dumb knocking on that door😂

We did service at Billy's house, and it was quite the experience. We cleaned his kitchen, and it probably hadn't been cleaned in a month. Let's just say there was lots of mold and rat poop. There was a pot of spaghetti on the stove, but it had been there for quite a while.... cuz half the pot was fuzzy mold and when I opened the lid the smell made me gag. We also discovered that his downstairs crawlspace is flooded with 4 feet of water... so we are gonna try to get him a subpump or somethin. I love Billy so much, but I wish there was more I could do for him. The conditions he lives in are unbelievable. Cleaning his kitchen took a long time and a lot of gagging. But we did it!! It won't stay clean for much longer, but it made him happy for sure.

Our friend Ben is going great! We had a lesson with the Dabell's and that helped so much. He wants to be baptized, but not quite yet. He wants to feel intellectually ready. But he knows that one day he will be baptized. It was his 70th birthday on Saturday!!!! He has no one to celebrate with because he is going thru a divorce and has no family in Tennessee, so he just went to work and wasn't doing anything too special. So, I decided to make him a card:) I got a bunch of card stock and make a big fancy card! We went to Walmart and bought a bunch of random stuff to put in a gift basket for him. We stopped by his house and have it to him and he was so happy😁 I was so happy too. This is a different kind of happiness than what I'm used to. I was happy to see him happy and know that he is loved. He later texted us saying how much of a difference that made to his day. Service is AMAZING! If you want to feel what it is really like to be happy, go serve someone. That is what real happiness is. I'll put in a picture with ben when we visited him:)

But yeah, that was my week! I'm trekking along and I'm learning lots on the way! I am so blessed with safety and health, and in return I will work my hardest. Thank you to everyone to has supported me so far! And thank you to those who send emails as well, it makes all the difference:) I love you all! (I'm not saying y'all yet... it's my goal not too haha)

Oh, also we found a massive (3inch) spider centipede thing on our ceiling, and it took me like 10 minutes to kill it, I was so scared. Apparently, they are super common here...☠️ tis the season for all the creepy bugs to come out of the ground.. I'm not ready for spring

Week 40

Not a lot happened this week, but it was supposed to be transfers, except for that I'm staying!! Side note, Sister Garbett's new companion (named sister Phillips) is SO awesome!! We actually have a lot in common and we have mutual friends from BYU and high school! Our little sisters are also so similar which is crazy, we both pulled up a picture and their outfits were almost the same hahaha.  But anyways, here are some cool things that I learned this week: --> Always always always follow promptings (if it's a good prompting, cuz if it's good, it's from God). Promptings are gateways for God to work miracles in our lives, but we have to act first. I'm still working on that, but I've seen it give me so much more confidence in the work I'm doing cuz I know that I'm not doing it alone:) --> Make friends and don't be afraid to share the gospel. When friendship comes first, sharing the gospel is a lot easier. That's one downfall with missionar...

Week 66

Hello everyone!! Happy late Easter! I hope everyone had an amazing Sunday, cuz I sure did!! Holidays on the mission are a little hard (for me at least), but this one was actually pretty good! The church service was amazing and it was PACKED. I felt like I was back in a Utah ward because there were so many people! Here are some reasons it was a great easter: Some friends we are teaching came to church! Donna who is a somewhat lonely older lady came and wore one of sister chan's dresses and she cried during the service and even sang one of the songs, which was huge. Donna is going through a lot right now, but I think she felt a moment of peace when she was at church.  Afterwards we went to the Gildays (a member that I'm close with ) to have lunch and a little scripture study. Isabel was there and that was fun hehe her and I are crazy. I don't know if I've "introduced" Isabel, but she is 19 and was just baptized in January. She moved here and almost i...

Week 74

Alrighty, here I am again. This was MIRACLE filled week. It had its ups and downs, but I'm going to focus on the ups! So first of all, the big miracle is James!!! This has got to be the most prepared person I have ever met on my entire mission! Not an exaggeration! I can't remember exactly what I've said about him in the past, so here's a little summary. We were walking around a neighborhood last Sunday after church and we decided to knock his door. He was really nice, so we came back on Tuesday to do a Bible study. Then we lost contact with him for the rest of the week. BUT he showed up to church on Sunday!!! We were so shocked!! Then he came to church AGAIN and he had read all the way up to Jacob, and he knew everything about the saints leaving to Utah, their history, everything about Joseph Smith and Emma Smith, and a bunch of other random facts! He said he knew Joseph Smith was called of God and he never wanted to stop coming to our church because he said it feels ...
